Robert was raised in Kentucky and completed his BA in Latin at Vanderbilt and PhD in Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto. In forty years as a professional archaeologist working primarily in Turkey, his research concentrated on pottery dating from 5500-150 BC. Robert returned to Kentucky and lives in Lexington. He has been turning for 15 years, creating a range of multiaxis, sculptural, and complex spindle work, in addition to numerous vessels. His vessels are influenced by his archaeological experience and knowledge of classical forms. In addition to taking classes in other media at the Folk School, Robert became an Assistant Instructor in turning classes from 2016 and Instructor in 2021. In the past 10 years he has fequently demonstrated for regional turning clubs and at the local Woodcraft store, as well as serving on the boards of two turning clubs and the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen.
