Barbara is a poet, essayist, and life story writer. She won the Cleveland State University Poetry Center’s First Book Competition for her poetry collection, "Piece Work," based on the textile industry of North Carolina. Her latest collection, "Blue Star," tells the story of war and its effect on families, using letters, journals, photographs, and census and military records. Barbara's work also appears in three award-winning chapbooks and her poetry and essays have been published in "The Southern Review," "Cimarron Review," "storySouth," "Cumberland River Review," and other journals and anthologies. She is the recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship, the Kentucky Arts Council Professional Assistance Award, and the Linda Flowers Prize, and has held residencies at Hambidge Center for the Arts and Willapa Bay AiR. She has an MFA from UNC-Greensboro and lives and writes in Lexington, NC.
