Frederick was raised in Appalachia, and a self-proclaimed "perpetrator of antique recreation". With a background in theater since youth, Berea College was his introduction to folklore, Appalachian studies and field work. Meeting and befriending Loyal Jones, Leonard Roberts, Joseph Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Stanley Robertson, Richard Chase, Bessie Jones and Utah Phillips continues to influence his telling and thinking about storytelling in form, content and presentation. Frederick is a charter member of Lime Kiln Arts (storytelling theater, Lexington, VA) and the National Storytelling Festival. He has presented workshops and concerts in America and Europe for thirty years, and is a professional dance master and a photographer/printer.
