Merina was born at home and raised in Cherokee, NC. She grew up surrounded by artists, with a grandmother who created both baskets and beadwork. Merina learned pottery directly from her mother, renowned Cherokee potter Amanda Swimmer. Her skill was born of the needs to supplement her salary to support her children, and Merina has now been creating pottery for over 40 years. She is passing on the tradition and culture to her children and grandchilren.
