Melanie has been teaching weaving and fiber arts at Warren Wilson College since 2009, a program she revitalized after it had grown quiet at the college for many decades. She began her love of stitching and plants at a young age, spending many hours working on small embroidery projects or walking around in her family's garden. She began sewing in high school, creating her own clothing line before working for small scale boutique stores in Asheville. The quest to learn how cloth was made later finding her way to the loom as a student at Haywood Community College's Professional Craft Fibers Program in 2003. Her work emphasizes the use of natural fibers and dyes, and locally sourced materials.
