Bill received his formal training in Chip Carving from Wayne Barton, starting with a 2-day beginner class, and later a 3-day intermediate Class, in Knoxville, TN. His Advanced training, a 6-day class taught by Wayne, took place at John Campbell Folk School. Soon after, Bill found a unique niche in sculpting Sea Turtles and other Marine & Aquatic animals, then embellishing them with Chip Carved patterns. Among his first competitive entries “Turtle Island” won 3 BOS awards in Southeastern US Shows, as did his later Bald Eagle adorned in individually Chip Carved feathers. Traditional Chip Carvings also factored into the dozen or so Best of Shows over a 10yr period. Bill’s passion for teaching Chip Carving to individuals at all skill levels gives him joy, as does the popularity of his unique Ready-to-Carve™ product line of original designs printed on basswood products – and now available as Ready-to-Burn™ for pyrographers.
