McKain is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, educator, and audio engineer originally heralding from rural northwest Washington state. Described by What’s Up Magazine as “a time capsule unearthed, fine-tuned and re-imagined”, Lakey draws creative inspiration from far corners of the American music tradition, touring internationally with her unique blend of traditional and original music. McKain comes to her work as an educator with a sense of curiosity and the firm belief that all people are inherently creative. Her teaching style blends technical focus with storytelling and personal reflection work- providing the tools for self-directed learning and empowering students to draw meaningful connections between music of the past and present. Lakey is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, an alum of Hedgebrook’s prestigious Songwriter Residency, and in 2019 placed 3rd in the Arkansas State Old Time Banjo Contest.
