Matt was employed as the blacksmith at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada for over seven years. There he worked on various reproduction projects and focused on traditional techniques. He later honed his forging skills while taking classes as a student host at the Folk School. He now designs and produces a wide range of ironwork from nails to architectural pieces and has taught blacksmithing here since 2004. Matt and teammate Paul Garrett competed in the 2009 World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy, and the 2015 Championship in Prague, Czech Republic, where Matt took 1st place in the Drawing and Design competition.
