Robert has been blacksmithing since 1996, focusing on the techniques of traditional joinery and knife making. He learned these skills through an internship at Tillers International in Michigan and as a work/study and returning student at the Folk School. He has taught at the Folk School since 2010. Along with blacksmithing, Robert runs an off-grid organic produce farm with his family in rural Hillsboro, WI. Features of their New Traditions Homestead include draft-horse power, alternative energy and water systems, "natural" buildings, and an icehouse. Robert is also co-founder of the Driftless Folk School in southwest Wisconsin.
