Valerie is the author of "Blood Clay," a story of the New South, honored with the Eric Hoffer Award in General Fiction; "Survivors," a novel about the Rust Belt of the 1970s; and "Neena Gathering," reissued as a classic in the post-apocalyptic genre. A new novel, "To the Bones," will appear in May 2019. She has also published poetry collections, "Wake Wake Wake" and "Hotel Worthy," with "Leopard Lady: A Life in Verse" being her latest. Her poetry has been honored with the Greg Grummer, Byron Herbert Reece, and Nazim Hikmet prizes. A graduate of West Virginia Univ. and Queens Univ. of Charlotte, she has been an NEA creative writing fellow and a North Carolina Arts Council fellow and now teaches creative writing at North Carolina A&T State Univ.
