Valerie is the author of "Blood Clay," a story of the New South, honored with the Eric Hoffer Award in General Fiction; "Survivors," a novel about the Rust Belt of the 1970s; and her first book, "Neena Gathering," reissued as a classic in the post-apocalyptic genre. A fourth novel, "Backwater," is now in submission, and Valerie is at work on a new novel. She has also published two poetry collections, "Wake Wake Wake," along with "Hotel Worthy," released in Jan. 2015. Her poetry has been honored with the Greg Grummer, Byron Herbert Reece, and Nazim Hikmet prizes. A graduate of West Virginia University and Queens Univ. of Charlotte, she has been an NEA creative writing fellow and a North Carolina Arts Council fellow and now teaches creative writing at North Carolina A&T State University.
