Sweetgrass Basketry - A Family Tradition (Intergenerational)
Date: Sunday, July 15 - Saturday, July 21, 2018
Subject: Basketry
Instructor: Lynette YousonFelitshea Venning
Share:

Learn to weave beautiful Charleston sweetgrass baskets from a pair of cousins who are 5th-generation weavers. This African style of basketry has been handed down through Gullah culture for centuries. The baskets are coiled sweetgrass, stitched together with palmetto fronds and accented with pine needles and bulrush. Make a large, shallow "rice fanner" basket, or two or more smaller projects. All levels welcome, though some manual dexterity is needed. Note: Additional materials fee is estimated at $175. PLEASE NOTE: This class is for 12-17 year olds to attend with a parent, grandparent, or guardian -- 1 youth per 1 adult. IF VIEWING THIS CLASS ONLINE, we ask that you call the office to register at 1-800-365-5724 (Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. EST.) Youths will receive a $100 discount on tuition.
