Southern Scrap Quilts
Date: Sunday, Apr 26 - Saturday, May 2, 2020
Subject: Quilting
Instructor: Penny Prichard
Share:

*INSTRUCTOR CHANGE FROM Pepper Cory to Penny Prichard* Southern scrap quilts, particularly from North Carolina, are a fascinating study in frugality, family life, and beauty. Studying the instructor's collection, you'll see techniques such as string quilting (narrow strips of saved fabrics sewn over newspaper) and Big Stitch hand quilting, along with traditional fabrics like feedsacks, denim, and plaids, common among Scots-Irish mountain settlers. Collect and bring lots of scraps to create your own quilt, with three patterns available for different skill levels. Piecing will be done by machine - basic experience helpful. This class is featured in our "Passing On Appalachian Traditions" series, and is designed to connect highly skilled Appalachian craft instructors with present-day students. Instruction includes historical and cultural relevance, in addition to helping students understand, recognize, and practice traditional Appalachian skills and techniques.

Tuition: $630.00
